Tuesday Feb 20 at 6pm, Scott Parkin from Rainforest Action Network will be at the Artery to discuss the growing campaign against Dallas utility company TXU's proposal to build 11 new coal fired power plants in north and central Texas. The $11 billion project will put out 78 million new tons of carbon emissions annually, making TXU the largest corporate emitter of greenhouse gases in the country. The project would negate Japan's commitment to the Kyoto Protocol, be the equivalent of 14 million new cars on the road, and match BP's worldwide emissions.

Currently, 3 corporate banks --Citibank, Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley-- have agreed to arrange financing for the project. Rainforest Action Network's Global Finance Campaign is currently campaigning for all 3 banks to withdraw as financial arrangers.

And the fight is on! Currently, a broad spectrum of groups have mobilized around the coal plants--scores of business leaders, evangelicals, environmentalists, students and 31 Texas Mayors. The plants are increasingly being challenged in the legislature, the courts, permitting hearings, and at the doorsteps and in the boardrooms of their banks.

More needs to be done, it's time to activate a broad movement of climate activists and take the TXU fight to the streets.

Learn how you can get more involved.

The next day (Feb. 21), activists with Rainforest Action Network plan to hold a day of action across the country to stop TXU. We'll be targeting the lead financial arrangers of dirty coal development - telling the banks "Stop Funding TXU’s Dirty Energy" and "No New Coal Plants". The target of the day will be Merrill Lynch. Twenty other financial organizations have already said they wouldn't touch the funding for TXU's dirty coal plants, now let's convince Merrill Lynch to do the same and push them to support clean, renewable energy.
