Remembering Carl Bernard Hampton – Founder of People’s Party II
Due to the honorable and profound history of the Black Panther Party’s (BPP) relationship with the Black Community in particular and the poor and oppressed in general, we the alumni of the former chapter of the Houston BPP wish to inform the Houston Community of the July 26, 27, 2008 memorial pilgrimage in behalf of the founder of the Houston BPP, Comrade Brother Carl Bernard Hampton.
On the 26th of July, we will meet @ 4:30pm at the 2800 block of Dowling. From there we will Caravan to Golden Gate Cemetery, 8400 Hirsch Rd, to pay homage to our most courageous fallen comrade.
Carl’s was assassinated on July 26, 1970 . That was 38 years ago. This moment in history is significant because we will formally journey to his gravesite for the first time in 38 years. It will be a sobering and somber visitation for one and all.
Once penitence is done, we will caravan back to Dowling. After arriving, we will hold a short candlelight vigil in memory of all that transpired @ the 2800 block of Dowling. The police shot Carl on the evening of the 26th of July. He did not succumb to the horrendous wounds inflicted on his body until the 27th of July.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Defending Democracy, the Station Museum of Contemporary Art will host a film screening of The Murder of Fred Hampton, a story about the Chairman of the Chicago Chapter of the BPP. It is located at 1502 Alabama Street at the corner of La branch.
