Agenda

1. Introduction to HCFAT
a. Mission: To promote single payer universal health care through education and policy setting

2. Newsworthy articles
a. A National Study of Chronic Disease Prevalence and Access to Care in Uninsured Adults, AP Wilper, S Woolhandler, KE Lasser, et al. Annals of Internal Medicine 2008;149:170-176
i. An estimated 11 million working-age Americans with chronic conditions are uninsured. Chronically ill patients without insurance are more likely than those with coverage to have not visited a health professional and not to have a standard site for care.

3. Results of “Understanding Health Care, Making Reform! A Community Workshop”
a. 35 individuals, 11 co-sponsors, 12 participating community organizations
b. At the end of the workshop
i. Fewer participants indicated that the health insurance industry, incremental reform, or tax credits will be part of sustainable reform
ii. More believed single payer is the best solution for sustainable reform
iii. People felt better prepared to give a presentation
iv. People felt they could identify the 3 parts of the US health care system and understood single payer quite well to very well
v. People felt they were somewhat to quite well prepared to answer tough questions about reform, prepared to give a presentation in front of a group, discuss the costs of health care and the pitfalls of “phony” reform

4. Project Ideas (6:30-7:30 pm)
a. Strategic plan to give HR 676 presentations to democratic clubs (N George, K Kenegos)
b. Houston City Council Resolution endorsing HR 676?
c. Single payer bill in the Texas state senate! (Sen Eliot Shapleigh)

*Beginning September 11, 2008 we will meet in the Fondren Lounge, Jones Building 2nd floor - December 11th meeting will be held in the Sanctuary Building S-301.
