2008 Mahatma Gandhi Peace Walk

Oct 5 2008 - 3:45pm
Oct 5 2008 - 7:00pm

Event Description:

The 2008 Mahatma Gandhi Peace Walk is now open for on-line registration! Please register at: http://www.gandhilibrary.org At the website the registration button is on the right top, just below "NEWS".

The Walk will start at 3:45 PM on Sunday, Oct 5, at the Gandhi Statue at the Rose Garden in the Hermann Park. The check-in desk will open at 2:30 PM. Please plan on being at the Gandhi statue between 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM to check in, collect your T-shirt and get set for the walk. The Walk, as in last year, will be inside the Hermann Park; a route of about 5K has been selected. The Walk will end at the Miller Outdoor Theater. The arrival of the walkers will signal the start of the The "1000 Lights For Peace" program, now a Houston tradition. Please plan on staying and attending the program which will conclude by 7:00 PM.

You can specify your T-shirt size when you register. Donations are optional; your participation is more important. There is a request for a $20 donation per adult or $10 per student, however you can donate any amount. If donating please bring a check made out to "Mahatma Gandhi Library" or bring cash. All donations received at the walk this year will be donated by the Gandhi Library to the non-profit organization "Asha for Education".

There were about 130 walkers in 2006 and about 200 in 2007; let us go for 300 this year! Please forward this email to your friends, family, co-workers, your school, your religious or other group or organization you belong to and encourage registration and participation. We are requesting registration by September 30 to allow time to plan for T-shirts, water, security detail, etc. I will send a reminder in a month from now. Final instructions will be sent by Oct 1. Registration is also possible on site on Oct 5, but T-shirts may or may not be available.

Free parking is available at the lot at the Rose Garden, the lot between the zoo and the theater and along the streets where allowed. There is also a pay-parking garage adjacent to the Museum of Natural Science. Carpooling is encouraged. Those coming from the downtown side may want to ride the Metrorail.
