[PAA-MilRecruit] 2000th soldier memorial events-Houston

Submitted by PAAMember on October 23, 2005 - 2:01pm. ::

You are invited to participate in a week-long memorial to the 2000th
US military casualty of the Iraq war, in the Heights in Houston. It
will begin the Saturday after the announced 2000th US casualty of the
Iraq war, with a ceremony each evening sponsored by a different
group, and ending the following Saturday (one week later) with a
larger ceremony.

I invite all of you to participate each evening -- especially on the
evening when the PAA and the Dept. of Peace group are planning a
ceremony, and on the final Saturday at the end of the week.

The US casualty count as of today (according to
http://icasualties.org/ ) is 1996. This means that it looks like our
Houston ceremonies will probably begin next Saturday, Oct. 29, and
end Nov. 5.

The memorial will be on the Heights Boulevard esplanade in Houston,
between 10th and 11th Streets, by the World War II memorial (just
south of 11th).

Different groups are sponsoring memorial ceremonies each evening.
The Progressive Action Alliance, along with members of the Houston
Department of Peace group, are sponsoring the ceremony on Wed.
(presumably this will be Nov. 2, if the 2000th casualty occurs this
week). Tentative plans are to have brief opening announcements, a
walking meditation, a few closing words, and the playing of taps. We
can use a recorded version, but if any of you can play taps for us
(or know of someone who can) on a bugle or trumpet, that would be
wonderful. Let me know if you or a friend can do this any of the
evenings next week.

Plans are to begin the ceremonies at 6:30 pm each day. This will be
just before sunset on Sat. Oct. 29, but will be well after sunset
after Daylight Savings Time ends the next day. There is some
lighting at the WWI memorial and limited lighting along Heights
Blvd., but if someone would like to bring candles, that would be
great. Let me know if you'd like to do this.

If you have other suggestions or would like to help plan details,
please let me know. We want to keep it simple and make sure it's a
memorial. The theme is to remember all the casualties (US military,
contractors, Iraqis, and others), not to be an anti-war demonstration
or event. If you want to bring a sign, please ensure that it
emphasizes remembering the casualties. There will be plenty of other
places and other events for Impeach Bush signs, etc. so please keep
them at home during the memorial.

The tentative schedule for this event, described sequentially, is as follows:
1. The Saturday after the announced 2000th US casualty of the Iraq
war, 2000 American flags and about 170 Texas flags will be installed
in the esplanade of Heights Boulevard between 10th and 11th Street
followed by an evening ceremony.
2. Each of the following evenings there will be a ceremony held by
co-sponsoring groups, during which additional flags will be planted,
if necessary.
3. The closing ceremony will be held the 2nd Saturday evening.

The Oil Patch Democrats have received approval to hold this memorial
as the lead organization, and we thank Jim Rine and others in that
group for coordinating this.

Cosponsoring organizations (with the list growing) are:

CodePink
First Unitarian Church
Greater Heights Democrats
Harris County Young Democrats
Kingwood Democrats
Military Families Speak Out
Progressive Action Alliance (PAA)
Progressive Populist Caucus
ROADwomen (River Oaks Area Democrat Women)
San Jacinto Democratic Veterans Brigade
Veterans for Peace

For more details and updates, or if you know of another group which
would like to be a co-sponsor, see
http://oilpatchdemocrats.blogspot.com/ and/or contact Jim Rine at
or 281-414-1386.

E-mail me if you'd like to help with the PAA ceremony on Wed. the
week of the memorial.

Thanks.

Bill
