Help with Impeach flyers at MLK parade
At our PAA Steering Committee meeting last night, we thought it would
be good to combine our Impeach Bush/Cheney efforts with outreach at
the MLK parade next Monday. We'll talk about this more at our
general PAA meeting Thursday.
In the past, we've been able to reach a lot more new people by going
to events that other people organize (like parades), than by having
rallies & protests of our own where most of the people who show up
are already familiar and supportive of our issues. Getting flyers to
people before the parade starts, when they are just sitting around
with nothing to do, works well and people have been quite receptive.
Having something on the flyer with a connection to the parade subject
helps even more.
The MLK parade offers a good outreach opportunity. At last year's
MLK parades, we distributed flyers with a picture of MLK, and with
info on the upcoming counter-inaugural protest. This year, we can
focus on impeachment and the reasons for it.
Kate Lepree is already working on a flyer to encourage folks to
attend a demonstration during the Jan. 31 State of the Union speech,
and agreed that the MLK parade would be a good place to distribute
them. She's agreeable to working in an emphasis on impeachment.
You've probably seen her earlier notes to this list about the Jan. 31
protest.
Here's what we need from you:
1. Help passing out flyers at the MLK parade Monday, and/or at other
events you attend before the State of the Union speech Jan. 31. Come
to the general PAA meeting Thursday night, or watch this list and our
web site for specifics on how to get flyers.
2. Ideas (quickly!) on what to put on the flyer. Kate already wants
to have info on The World Can't Wait, bring down the Bush regime, &
the Jan. 31 protest. Other possibilities include:
* an image of MLK with a caption about Nixon using the FBI to
illegally spy on him in the 60's because of his support of civil
rights and opposition to the Vietnam war, & now Bush/Cheney are
illegally spying on other US citizens in a similar manner.
* Reasons why Bush & Cheney should be impeached -- the illegal
spying, lies about torture, lies about WMD's, lies about connections
between 9/11 and Sadam Hussein, continued lies about the occupation,
lies about what the Bush regime was doing to help Katrina victims and
other failures in that disaster, lies about No Child Left Behind,
lies about Social Security, lies about Medicare reform, etc.
* How to contact your Congressional rep or local press (radio,
newspapers, etc.), and why it's important to do it NOW. (We
especially need suggestions on how to motivate people to do this!)
3. Help from anyone with graphics art experience on the flyer. We
want it to be attractive & something people will want to read.
People waiting for a parade to start have plenty of time to read what
we give them, and so we can make this a full page flyer, even
double-sided, if needed. I'd like ideas on things to motivate people
to take action, to contact their Congressional reps & the press, etc.
It doesn't do much good to have them read info on how bad Bush &
Cheney are, or even come to a protest, if our elected officials
and/or the press don't know how they feel.
Please reply to this message, to send your ideas (by tomorrow if
possible) -- either to me individually, or to this list if you want
to share them with others.
If any of you would like to help with the flyer layout, especially if
you have experience with using graphics to make it appealing to read,
or with getting them printed (probably Fri. or Sat.), let me know.
