A Gulf Coast Juneteenth, a free concert event in Houston's public
amphitheater, commemorates Juneteenth, a celebration of freedom and
the abolition of slavery. Juneteenth originated in Texas and is
growing in popularity across the United States. More than two months
after the end of the Civil War (April 9, 1865), it was proclaimed in
Galveston, Texas by Major General Gordon Granger that slaves were to
be freed on June 19, 1865.

The upcoming celebration in Hermann Park - A Gulf Coast Juneteenth -
features an exciting, diverse lineup of traditional African American
music from Houston and throughout the region, including: ReBirth Brass
Band from New Orleans, Louisiana; Geno Delafose and French Rockin'
Boogie (Zydeco) from Eunice, Louisiana; Blues guitarist Sherman
Robertson with legendary Soul and Blues singer Trudy Lynn from
Houston, Texas. There will also be Houston singer/songwriters and
Gospel artists performing original Juneteenth compositions that have
been commissioned for the occasion.

The event is produced by Houston Institute for Culture with support
from the City of Houston Miller Theatre Advisory Board and National
Endowment for the Arts.
