Upcoming progressive events - Nov. 18, 2005

Submitted by PAAMember on November 18, 2005 - 7:00pm. ::

Here's a reminder of some selected events of special interest,
including the big Out-Of-Iraq march and rally that I hope everyone
can attend tomorrow.

More details (when, where, why, maps, flyers, etc.) on all these
events and more are on the PAA calendar, which you can get to from
our new home page at http://www.paa-tx.org -- just click on the PAA
calendar link at the top right side of the page, or on any of the
events listed in the right column for details on that particular
event.

You can also get links to online versions of calendars from Houston
Indymedia, the HPJC, and other organizations on the top right side of
our home page at http://paa-tx.org/ .

To add your own event to our calendar, see the "Submit an Event" link
below the event listings, at the bottom of the right column at
http://paa-tx.org/ .

Sat. Nov. 19: March and Rally Against the War in Iraq

This is the big event that was postponed due to Hurricane Rita.

It's in downtown Houston. Please come and show your support for
withdrawal from Iraq, and learning the truth about why the US invaded.

Participants will assemble at 12 noon at Market Square in (301
Milam), and then march to City Hall (901 Bagby) for a rally with
speakers, music, and poetry.

Bring your protest signs, a table for your organization, and
literature to pass out. It should be a great place to network with
other activists. I'll be there with our "Support Our Troops -
Impeach Bush" bumper stickers, so if you need some for yourself or
your friends, look for our PAA table.

We (the Progressive Action Alliance) are one of the sponsors, along
with many others.

both English and Spanish)

Sun. Nov. 20: Movie - Wal-Mart: the High Cost of Low Prices

This is the new expose on Wal-Mart, from Robert Greenwald (previous
films include "Uncovered: The War on Iraq" and "Outfoxed"). Wal-Mart
is already going into attack mode on this film, which shows how the
retail giant crushes both small businesses and the lives of its
employees.

Mon.-Tues. Nov. 21-22: See Green Party 2004 Presidential candidate David Cobb

David Cobb had the courage and integrity to challenge the Ohio
election results last fall, even though Kerry wouldn't do anything
about the massive fraud that took place there and which cost him the
election. He'll be in town next week to talk with Greens and other
progressives.

Monday at 12 noon, David Cobb will address the Campus Greens at the
University of Houston, at the plaza behind the University Center.
All are welcome.

Monday evening, at this month's Harris Co. Green Party meeting, see
and hear David Cobb talk about past and future elections.

or call 713-705-5594

Tue. evening Nov. 22, there will be a reception/fund raiser with
David Cobb that's open to all. Call 713-705-5594 to RSVP and get
details.

Fri. Nov. 25: Buy Nothing Day

Support sustainable living, by hitting materialism where it hurts.
Join in the effort to resist the yearly push by giant retailers
towards overconsumption and the idea that the way to happiness is to
buy more and more of things you don't really need. Join the
worldwide consumer boycott next Friday.

Details: http://www.adbusters.org/metas/eco/bnd/ or
http://frugalliving.about.com/cs/consumeraddiction/a/112100.htm

Be sure to see Adbuster's 2005 TV spot that TV stations have refused
to air, at http://www.adbusters.org/metas/eco/bnd/tvspot.php

And after Buy Nothing Day, before you go shopping, please consider
how your choice of merchant may help the big Republican donors and
other businesses supporting the slide towards fascism. See our
listing of progressive consumer-oriented web sites at
http://www.paa-tx.org/links/08 .
One of my favorite web sites on that list, which has the number of
ads on Fox News from each company, is
http://www.spendingliberally.org/index.cgi .

Yes, there are companies who still have ethics left. You just have
to look for them.

Remember, you can get details on any of these events from the PAA
online calendar or others, which you can find at http://paa-tx.org/

To get the HPJC's calendar of events e-mailed every two weeks from
the Houston Peace and Justice Center, please e-mail Herb Rothschild
and ask him to add you to the HPJC
calendar e-mail list. I encourage you to sign up. They don't have
all the events listed in my e-mail (not ones just scheduled, or
regular meetings), but they have numerous others.

Peace,
Bill
