Lecture: Rising Powers, Shrinking Planet: The New Geopolitics of Energy by author, Michael Klare

How is America’s energy dependence altering our country’s place in the world and how might this affect your future? On 18 September at 7:00pm, hear Michael Klare, discuss his latest book Rising Powers, Shrinking Planet: The New Geopolitics of Energy, and describe how the neocons’ prediction of a “new American century” didn’t pan out because of shrinking energy resources and US dependence on foreign petroleum. Klare, who is a frequent guest on NPR and Democracy Now, will speak and sign books in Fondren Hall at St Paul’s United Methodist Church, 5501 Main St., across from the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. Klare will sign books after his talk. For more information, see the event calendar at www.hpjc.org or call 281 414 1386. This free public event is sponsored by the Houston Peace & Justice Center.

Jim Blackburn on the Environment

A Spiritual Quest: Enough? Enough!
Tuesday, September 30
7:00 p.m.

With climate change promising massive ecological disruptions, pioneer environmental attorney Jim Blackburn will offer observations about living things, our connectedness to them and our need to take effective action soon. Fundamental to this discourse is the concept of ENOUGH, a theme that will be woven through the presentation. Blackburn will introduce the concept of CONNECTUALITY and its power to transform our thinking, perception and will to act. Is some form of environmental triage our destiny or can we find the will to take action to combine economic and ecologic visions and recover our lost spirituality? Blackburn’s presentation of “A Spiritual Quest” will address these issues and more.

Event Description:

Again this election year, the Progressive Action Alliance is hosting a debate watch party for the last presidential "debate"/candidate Q&A.

Our party may be a little different than others, and we hope more fun -- as we did previously, we encourage everyone to bring balled-up socks or other soft objects to throw at the screen whenever one of the candidates says something you don't like. We all enjoyed this in the past, and spontaneous, enthusiastic comments about the candidates are often uttered. Use your imagination to think of what people would say when McCain says some of his usual lines...
