this will have major impact on the Republicans I think! Geez, Strayhorn
started out a Democrat when the Dems were in control, switched to Republican
during the 90's, and now she's independent.

If Strayhorn doesn't think she can beat Perry in the Republican
primary, why does she think she can beat him as an independent in the general
election? Is she hoping to cut some kind of deal with the democrat or
with Kinky?

I cannot fathom why she would do this as it will definitely IMHO take
votes away from Perry.

1. she has utterly alienated herself from the Republican party who is
now on an absolute terror, actively going after Republicans who sided
with the Democrats in the Texas legislature on several issues -
school finance reform at the top of the list.

This IMHO is significant b/c at least I believe, according to
Democratic party rules, officers of the Democratic party (state
chair, SDEC members, county chairs and the like) are not personally,
or while representing the party supposed to endorse Democratic
candidates if they have Democratic opponents. After the primary, they
can endorse all they want, but not before.

The Republicans are *actively* eating their own - endorsing even more
right wing, sure vote candidates over some Republican incumbents, etc...

2. I don't think she has a chance of winning at all, let alone as an
independent - am I being too optimistic here?

3. since she's the ultimate party switcher, 1st a Democrat, then a
Republican and now an independent, nothing would surprise me in terms
of her trying to cut a deal. Hey.. she can try right???

I think she is trying to distance herself from the "culture of corruption" that has stained the Republican party and in particular the Texas Republican Party headed by Tom DeLay.  I would not want to have Republican next to my name in an election in 2006 either (of course, I wouldn't anyway in any year)

The Democratic Party is a BIG TENT, but there is NO ROOM for those
who advance the agenda of THE RICH (Corporate Owners) at the EXPENSE of LABOR and the POOR.

In EVERY case, "Barriers to Trade" and "Restrictions on Corporations" were created to protect something valuable!

OK I think her strategy is this: by running in the general election as an
independent, she will pull enough of her base (comparatively moderate Repubs) to
keep Perry from getting 50% and force him into a runoff. She is hoping
she will get more votes than the Dem or Kinky and will get the 2nd spot in the
runoff. Then the Dem and Kinky supporters will be forced (as usual) to
support the lesser-of-evils and she will win.

Very interesting. It might work. Then again it might backfire by splitting
the Repub vote so badly that the Dem or even Kinky will get into the runoff or
even win outright. But no matter what, we would be rid of Perry which has
to be a plus.

Of course this must scare the hell out of Perry and the Repub
establishment, so maybe she is just trying to force them to cut some kind
of deal to get her out of the race, like letting her run unopposed in
the Repub primary next time or - who knows what? All that logrolling should
be fun to watch.
